04 : KIM JOON BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1966 in Seoul, South Korea, where he lives and works. He first investigated tattoo as a subject matter in the mid-1990s with three-dimensional sculpture before making use of off-beat techniques such as digital 3D. While still a cultural taboo in Korea, tattoos are for him a way to externalize the subconscious. They show in broad daylight the hidden desires induced in our collective ideologies by materialistic societies. According to Kim, consumerism has turned humans into generic beings of desire, a desire which devours us to such an extent, it affects the very perception we have of each other.
The hyper realistic image designed by 3D program, which is similar to a photograph, renders the social iconography of the tattoo more effective and more persuasive. The texture of the skin in his works seems very real at first glance, similar to a real picture, but the illusion goes beyond the resemblance. « I see skin, or in some cases the monitor screen, as an extension of a canvas ». Kim Joon
