05 : ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Brescia in 1963, Paola Pezzi lives and works in Milan, Italy. Student at the Accademia di Brera of Milan, she attended the course of Luciano Fabro and Zeno Birolli incorporating and customizing the lessons of Arte Povera, which have her a quick understanding of contemporary artistic vanguards.

Towards the end of the eighties Paola Pezzi made her debut with sculptures that she treated in a pictorial fashion, with contemporary materials (such as polyurethane, foam rubber and various types of fabrics) forgotten then resurrected, and exposed as relics of our time. The Earth as a place, a space, a landscape, a link between the outside and the inside; centers of gravity out of time, heavy and yet so light... And a need confusing. Concentrations rather than big works : to spatial divagations, she prefers the portions of absorbed space, autonomous, which speaks of Man and its roots. Towards the end of the 1990s, mobility and the need to explore new trails led Paola Pezzi to open herself to painting, which she conceived as a tool for reading, reflecting and describing her work through a kind of journey log. This will give rise to large canvases on the theme of the art studio ("Studio mobile") presented as a habitat explaining how it operates: she uses the brush to represent everything around her, sculptures filling the floor and the ceiling ("Ritratti di sculture", sculpture portraits) to her animals, not to mention her carpet dotted with fish (which later became a recurring motif of a vast series of paintings). In 2000, her immersion in the reign of color gave rise to new sculptures and compositions that she created using a wide range of objects drawn from the material world (cork, wood, felt...), drawing from both the materials of the painting (pencils, pastels, charcoal, erasers, pallets...) and in the daily repertory (straws, toothpicks, fringes, cotton buds, matches of reels... ), to infuse renewed energy, vitality and dynamism into his work.

Given the manual dimension that has always characterized the achievements of Paola Pezzi, why not explicitly introduce the artist's hands into the works ? This hand that folds, squeezes, sews, prints... The year 2005 marks the birth of the first works where one finds real hands that busy to form the work, of which they then become the protagonists: "Valanga"(Avalanche), "Vortice" (Vortex).

Although her experience has expanded to new horizons, the last few years are characterized by a "focus" and a certain "artistic sharpening" which are more than evident in her latest works in felt and rubber : a refusal of all formal complacency to reveal the work in its purest form, by adding to it a possibility of personal growth, capable of extending into space and time into an infinity of variations.
