_CHUN KWANG YOUNG AT MUSEUM DE REEDE
Chun Kwang Young makes wall hangings and
sculptures from over a thousand paper parcels which
he fastens onto a surface piece by piece, each
overlapping the other like roof tiles. The meticulous
folding of the mulberry-like papers, with a string or
strip of paper knotted around each parcel, is a labour
intensive process carried out with the Zen philosophy
of limitless patience. The craftsmanship is an integral
part of the artwork. The abstract geometric shapes in
beautiful shades of colour subtly refer to early
paintings by the artist and to his affinity with Western
visual culture.
