04 : ABOUT THE ARTIST
MAURICE FRYDMAN
Born in Paris in 1928 to an immigrant family from Poland, Maurice Frydman lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Passionate about human anatomy, he dedicates his work to the theme of the couple and the child. In addition, he is haunted by the destructive potential of humanity, its barbarity and its crimes. Love and violence are two recurring themes that permeate his work, which is guided by his personal story and his deep memories bound to the Shoah.

The contemporary work of Maurice Frydman seems to maintain very little contact with his previous productions. The gap is wide between the figurative work of classical expression and the abstract work that he builds today from plastic film, a technique which he is the only one to use today.

With Maurice Frydman, the plastic transformed into a large monochrome is another way of evoking the human skin, with its wrinkles, its folds, its wounds, its tenderness, its tears.

« Maurice Frydman thus suddenly gave up the traditional tools of the painter and sculptor, tools he knew well, to follow the new path he had uncovered and which would centre on “fold” and “stretchability”. This approach opened up all possible variables of the body seen as a “skin of light”. Plastic film, thanks to its suppleness and transparency, became the ancillary film that lends itself to torsions, stretchings, folds and creases, almost to breaking point… »
