05 : ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Born in 1967 in Seoul, South Korea, Meekyoung Shin lives and works between London and Seoul.
For her first solo exhibition at the Lee-Bauwens Gallery, the artist invites us to take place in another world. Here, time stands still, the spectators plunge into a world inhabited by ghosts with reconstructions of objects inscribed in time, sometimes petrified, strikingly realistic.
Made from soap, her works replicate artefacts and canonical works of art, from Asian porcelain vases to Greek and Roman sculptures, translating between continents, cultures and centuries in the process.
The works of Meekyoung Shin with its thousands and one details appear in a suspended time like an imprint that our dreamy glance contributes to dilate further and gives us to read another image of the past. Meekyoung Shin completed her BFA and MFA at Seoul National University. In 1995, she moved to London to obtain her MFA at the Slade School of Art, University College London, and has since held solo exhibitions internationally including Haunch of Venison in London (2010) and Arko Art Center in Seoul (2018). She has participated in numerous group shows including the Museum of Art and Design of New York, and the 2013 Asian Art Biennial in Taiwan. More recently her work was exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm. Meekyoung Shin's works are found in collections all over the world, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of South Korea. In 2013, Meekyoung Shin was nominated for the Korean Artist Prize.
